Lila Place is a documentary film editor. Her editing credits include the Oscar shortlisted 116 Cameras, which premiered at the 2017 Full Frame Film Festival; The Undocumented Lawyer, which premiered at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and was broadcast on HBO; Harley which also premiered at Tribeca in 2020; The Pawn (Tipimages), which premiered at Hot Docs in 2015 and won Best Documentary at the 2016 Havana Film Festival; Furever (PBS/Gaia Indie Films), which premiered at the 2013 Hot Docs Film Festival and went on to screen at over 50 film festivals worldwide; the Cinema Eye Honors award-winning Minka, which was nominated for an International Documentary Association award and premiered at the 2011 Full Frame Film Festival; The Road to Redemption, which she co-directed with Jonathan Stack, had its world premiere at IDFA in 2008. She recently completed In The Bones, by the award-winning team behind Better This World. In addition, she has been a consulting editor on award-winning documentaries, including The Untyings and Take Me Away Fast, which premiered at the 2011 Full Frame International Film Festival. Previously, Lila worked as an Apprentice and Assistant Editor for Woody Allen and Spike Lee, among others, working on such films as Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Hollywood Ending and 25th Hour.
She has also directed several short films which have screened nationally and internationally including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and on PBS. Her films include Under The Roller Coaster, which won Best Documentary Short at Slamdance Film Festival and an Outstanding Film Award by the Caucus Foundation and Each One Teach One, which premiered at the 2004 Aspen Shortfest.
In 2016 she was accepted to participate in ANIDOX:LAB, a year-long professional training laboratory held by The Animation Workshop and the Danish Film Institute, where she delved into the world of Animated Documentary Filmmaking.
Lila believes that intimate, personal stories can convey powerful, universal themes and that documentaries can be as cinematic and emotionally compelling as fiction. Her work is influenced by her background in music, cultural anthropology, and dance. She’s fluent in Spanish and Italian and has edited many foreign language films.
Lila received a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Barnard College, Columbia University and an MA in Documentary Film Production from Stanford University. She lives and works in New York and Sardinia, Italy.
