POOL

Director/Editor

On a hot summer's day, the pool is pure joy; a refuge from the sweltering concrete and also a playground of splashes, dives, bubbles and games. Pool captures the pleasures the Red Hook public pool offers to a diverse NYC public in the hot months of summer.  The Brooklyn-based group Secret Society, a dynamic 18-piece Jazz band directed by the composer Darcy James Argue, provides the musical score.

The Red Hook pool is one of eleven outdoor public pools built in New York City in 1936 and financed by the Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA). These public pools offered millions of New Yorkers relief from the scorching summer heat and changed the way people spent their leisure time.  Seventy-two years later, these public pools continue to play a vital role in their communities. The film looks at the special role the public pool plays in the life of this ever-changing city.
